I envy the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. They have a hard job coming up with all the money needed for our county. However, I’m against the establishment of data centres outside the already-designated district for data center overlay as a source revenue.

If data centers are approved in areas other than the overlay district, they can be built all over the county, from the Manassas National Battlefield Park to Prince William Forest and beyond.

Why am I against this? THE ENVIRONMENT Research shows that data centers can be detrimental to the environment if they are located near parks, forests, and other protected green spaces. Their carbon footprint is comparable to that of the aviation sector. They can severely impact forest habitats, and they have a significant impact upon our water supply.

This is supported by a lot of data, many of which you may have heard before. Future generations have a responsibility to protect the environment. This is how we will care for our children, grandchildren, and future generations.

The environment crisis is a serious threat to the planet. It must be addressed, not exacerbated. A comprehensive plan is needed for the future development of Prince William County. An in-depth study of the environmental impact should be done before any commercial or residential development in our county is approved.
