The Scottish planner and conservationist, Patrick Geddes came up with the phrase “Think Globally Act locally” and was used in the context of Environmental challenges faced by the world. It embodies the idea of fixing the world, not waiting for miracles to happen. Even though they are of negligible effect, when taken together, this can have a profound global transformational effect.
To think globally we must think together, as all people on Earth share the same Environment that is managed by biodiversity. It’s not necessary to claim an intellectual notion; just being a responsible citizen can help us in achieving things. Globalization has enabled the developed world and the developing world to come together and share a common understanding of environmental issues. Modern technology makes it easy to influence global issues. Sharing a simple social media post with a philosophical message can inspire people to do great things for society.
Rightly said by Woodrow T. Wilson, “We cannot be separated in interest or divided in purpose. We stand together until the end.”
This quote has a profound meaning. We are all connected and dependent on one another for environmental issues. The real challenge lies in reducing the gap between developed and developing countries in terms of their Environmental goals and preferences. Since developing economies tend to be most reliant on natural resource and are bearing much of the burnt of climate change, it’s more of a question of survival for them. However the developed world are now finding the sustainable solutions either by promising zero emissions or reduced emissions, but in order to meet the goals set by the developing countries they can’t cut the emissions all of a sudden and there is when the main problem arises.
Citizens from developing countries tend to think differently and have a harder time achieving their goals. Although the impact of each citizen will be less in developing countries than in developed countries, it will still have a significant impact on new and future global environmental issues.
It is essential that the developing world implements policies to protect their environment. Second, citizens should be involved in the decision-making process. As a part the developing world, we can share our ideas and perspectives. This is what sustainable developed countries have done. Multiple actors, researchers, students and their teachers worked hard to address this issue. Even the business community can be motivated to incorporate new innovations into their business models.
Even if our business is small, we can improve the service we provide and thus send a positive message. Social dialogue can be a powerful tool to monitor progress in all areas. The world can be transformed by the light of unity and small acts of solidarity, multiplied by millions. It’s all about the change of mindset as earth is what we all have in common.
