The beverage giant made a bold announcement about its commitment to plastic waste reduction.
ATLANTA— According to a recent study, Coca-Cola Co. is the world’s largest plastic polluter. Global Brand Audit, announced Thursday a New commitmentRefillable or returnable glass, plastic bottles, or refillable containers at fountains or dispensers to at least 25% of global beverage sales by 2030.
The United States has already launched reuse pilot programs. The beverage giant has already launched refillable PET plastic containers that can be used to make new bottles in South Africa. Coca-Cola plans to expand on its programs with fast food brands like Burger King in order to ensure that consumers have access to refillable containers at dispensers or fountains.
As a response, Alex TrueloveU.S. PIRG Education Fund zero wasted director and Steve Blackledge Environment America Research & Policy Center senior conservation directors, issued the following statement:
“Whales and sea turtles, birds, and countless others are needlessly choking and dying from microplastics in single-use products such as beverage containers. We must collectively choose wildlife over single-use plastic trash. Nothing that is only used for a few moments should poison our environment for many years.Blackledge stated. “We are pleased to see Coca-Cola today’s announcement to say yes to reusable alternatives for single-use plastic. It’s a positive step and one we hope other beverage companies will follow.
Coca-Cola’s commitment to reusable containers and bottles points to a more wasteful future. It’s also a welcome acknowledgement from the world’s top plastic polluter, that we can’t recycle our way out the plastic waste crisis. Truelove.
