PU and WWF Pakistan join forces to save the environment

LAHORE: World Wide Fund for Nature Pakistan (WWF Pakistan), Punjab University, and a Memorandum of Understanding have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for climate change mitigation and protection. A ceremony was held here at the PU Vice Chancellors Office on Monday. PU VC Professor Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhter and Director General WWF Pakistan Hammad Khan Khan, Manager Zohaib Jved Bhatti, Director External Liaisons Dr Sobia Khhurram, PU Deans Dr Umbreen Javaid Khan Durrani, and Dr Abdullah Khan Durrani were all present. Both parties agreed to work together to promote research related to key practices of WWF Pakistan. This will help to reduce the effects of climate change on the environment and improve the lives of vulnerable communities. WWF will extend its services to promote environment day objectives and themes while engaging all stakeholders. Both organizations would collaborate in various areas of WWF Pakistan to conduct science-based studies, engage students in internships, seminars, workshops and awareness campaigns, etc.

Prof Niaz Ahmad, PU VC, stated that PU would partner with WWF Pakistan in order to draw support from all departments and research centres at PU for research projects of mutual importance. He said that PU will offer training sessions and capacity-building workshops to WWF-Pakistan staff in mutually agreed thematic areas. He stated that both organizations would collaborate with WWF Pakistan on joint research projects and ensure the participation by researchers from both institutions. He said that PU would coordinate with WWF-Pakistan’s Communication Department, for jointly developing communication material. He said that PU would promote WWF-Pakistan’s awareness material within students, both general and those enrolled in relevant courses. He stated that villages must be educated about climate change. He stated that too much material was being used in the agriculture sector and kilns, which is harmful for health. Therefore, we need to educate the villagers. Hammad Naqi Khan stated that WWF Pakistan would offer students opportunities to solve environmental problems in Pakistan.
