SP offers a platform for global auto manufacturers and their suppliers to collaborate towards a shared vision of an automobile industry with positive environmental impacts. Industry leaders come together through SP to share best practices, advance action on key environmental sustainability priorities like carbon neutrality, sustainable material management, and water conservation.

The Water Council is an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that promotes freshwater innovation. It has more than a decade collective experience working with companies.

The Water Council and Ford Motor Company will co-chair the first phase. The SP’s Water Stewardship Work Group is working together to test the design for a sector-wide water program. It will be centered on a decision-matrix and an action plan that help member organizations achieve excellence when it comes to water stewardship.

Ford believes that safe and clean water is a fundamental human right. Therefore, Ford has a responsibility to manage water resources efficiently and sustainably so that other users have access to water. Ford has made great strides in water conservation at our sites, but we also recognize the tremendous potential to work with industry peers and suppliers to further support global water challenges.” Andy Hobbs, Global Director, Environmental Quality Office Ford Motor Company

Toyota recognizes water as a global issue that must be managed locally. Therefore, we work to minimize water usage at our sites and optimize it based on local conditions. We are looking forward working with other industry partners in this new project to improve our industry’s collective efforts and drive water sustainability practices through the supply chains. Mark Yamauchi, Sustainability Manager, Toyota Motor North America.

SP will collaborate with The Water Council to pilot a sector-wide water governance methodology. It would be used to help member companies identify water-related risks that could impact priority sites, understand their impact on their source water and watersheds, prioritize risks and evaluate opportunities to take action, develop water stewardship strategies, commits and targets based in part on prioritized risk and opportunities, and communicate water stewardship actions and metrics to key stakeholders, customers, and other key stakeholders.

“By supporting the development of a Water Stewardship program that SP can implement together with its members, I intend to chart a credible, transparent path for individual businesses to follow leading to meaningful enterprise-wide water management strategies, commitments, and actions. We expect that companies from the supply base will be more prepared to report to customers and key stakeholders about the status and results of their water stewardship performance.” Matt HowardVice President Water Stewardship, The Water Council.

“Through this project we intend to create an industry-supported leadership structure to help companies in automotive value chain identify and prioritize risk related to water. We also plan to understand potential water stewardship strategies that they can implement based upon those prioritized risks. We look forward to working with The Water Council as an expert partnership to support our members’ ongoing efforts in conserving and protecting this precious resource.” Kellen MahoneyDirector, Suppliers Partnership for the Environment.
