Officials announced Wednesday, February 23 that a committee of experts from India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has recommended that JSW Steel Limited’s greenfield steel plant project in the eastern state of Odisha be granted environmental approval.
However, the experts have set out a series of conditions to grant approval. They stipulate that the project must abide by any judicial orders that may occasionally be issued by courts. Construction of the project cannot take place in the northeastern part of the high tideline and sand dune area near the Paradip coastal port town.
A total of 209 acres has been allocated for the project as forest land. The forest area will remain unaffected and separate from the steel plant and the allied ferry that serves it.
JSW Steel Limited proposes construction of a steel mill with a capacity of 13.2 million tonnes per annum, a captive power plant of 900 MW and a cement plant capable of 10 million tonnes.
