ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission Alexandria Renew Enterprises(AlexRenew), Alexandria’s public wastewater treatment provider, is looking for nominees to the Ellen J. Pickering Environmental Excellence Award in 2022. The award recognizes Alexandria residents or groups that demonstrate a commitment to the environment and work to preserve local natural resources. Nominations must reach us by March 18
The award was established in honor of Ellen J. Pickering’s legacy. Pickering was a former member both of the City Council as well as the board of AlexRenew (formerly known as the Alexandria Sanitation Authority). Pickering, an environmental conservationist who has been a long-standing advocate, worked to ensure the Potomac River waterfront was open to the public and not restricted to private interests. She was also instrumental to the creation of the Mount Vernon Trail from Alexandria to Washington and managed the installation a thousand resident-donated cherry blossom trees during her tenure at the Alexandria Beautification Commission.
The Award Committee is made up of representatives from AlexRenew and the Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission. Each year, the award committee recognizes an individual or group for their efforts in caring for our environment in active and demonstrable ways.
