Today, The Green Track is a new campaign launched by the European Commission in collaboration the Global Youth Biodiversity Network. #TheGreenTrack is a key initiative of the European Year of Youth 2022. It is designed to mobilize young people in Europe ahead of CBDCOP 15, the major UN Biodiversity Conference, which will take place this summer. The Green Track provides young people with a platform to express their hopes and concerns regarding nature, biodiversity, and Europe’s sustainable future.
The Green Track was built around more than 30 animals under the slogan Ready to Act #ForNature EventsThe European Commission supported young people in organizing these events. These events will cover a range of topics and formats. They will be implemented locally by communities to reflect the European Year of Youth principles of inclusion, co-creation and bottom-up.
Virginijus, Commissioner of the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Sinkeviius said:
We can use the passion and drive that young Europeans have to make nature and biodiversity a sustainable path to recovery by harnessing their passion. This is the core of the Green Track campaign. It amplifies the voices of European youth, and engages them in the implementation the European Green Deal. The European Green Deal represents our strategy for people, planet and planet. I urge all young Europeans, especially those in Europe, to follow the Green Track and help it become a reality.
Young people will play a crucial role in mobilising communities so that the future global agreement on biodiversity becomes a reality. #TheGreenTrack allows young Europeans to take part in the debate and offer their opinions on how to deal with issues such as biodiversity loss. The campaign also includes an online platform that serves as an information hub and a platform where young people can submit ideas for how Europe can be set up on #TheGreenTrack towards a more sustainable future.
Background
The negative effects of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution have major impacts on the health, economy, and the natural environment. At COP 15, world leaders will agree on a post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. The EU is ready and willing to lead efforts and collaborate with like-minded partner countries to reach an ambitious global agreement that will halt biodiversity loss.
#TheGreenTrack is a dialogue between European youth to determine the next steps to restore biodiversity. The initiative engages and mobilizes young people through a dedicated web platform, events and on social media, in partnership with youth organizations across the EU.
2022 is the year. European Year of YouthThe initiative aims at helping young Europeans create a greener, more inclusive, digital future. There are many opportunities to learn, share visions, meet people, and take part in activities across Europe during the year. The European Year of Youth coincides NextGenerationEU, which opens up new perspectives for young people. It offers quality jobs, education, and training opportunities for Europe of tomorrow.
