MONTGOMERY (Ala.) – Friday is Earth Day. This day is a day to show appreciation for our planet and to discuss ways to protect it. Alabama Department of Environmental Management celebrates Earth Day every single day, but especially April 22.
April 22 is the 52nd Anniversary of the first Earth Day. ADEM will highlight activities on Friday that promote or draw attention to the need to all be planet protectors. This year’s theme: Invest in our Planet.
ADEM staff have been traveling across the state in recent months to engage with students as part of Earth Day preparations. Nearly 20 schools were visited by the staff, as well as other locations, including a nature preserve and zoo and children’s museum. They presented hands-on demonstrations to teach young people about watershed protection, pollution and recycling.
According to ADEM Director Lance LeFleur, education is power. By empowering students with knowledge, we hope that they will be better stewards and stewards of the environment.
ADEM has also produced a series of videos featuring ADEM personnel explaining and demonstrating their critical functions in protecting Alabama’s environment. These videos cover many topics such as air monitoring, fish tissues sampling, water quality, and recycling. These videos can be found on ADEMs YouTube channel
In celebration of Earth Day, the lights at the Retirement Systems of Alabama buildings in downtown Montgomery (RSA) will glow green and blue. This is a growing tradition. For the third consecutive year, ADEM and RSA have partnered to raise public awareness through the display lights.
