Jack Sullivan Receives Alexandrias Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The City of Alexandria Environmental Policy Commission(EPC) Alexandria Renew Enterprises(AlexRenew), an independent provider of public wastewater treatment in Alexandria, presented Jack Sullivan the 2022 Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award.

Sullivan is a long-standing citizen volunteer and advocate for Alexandria’s green spaces, and waterways. James Beall (Vice Chair of AlexRenews Board of Directors) presented the award yesterday at the Citys Cycling & Seedlings Event at Ben Brenman Park. This event is part of Citys Earth Day celebrations. Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson and Councilmembers Kirk McPike and Sarah Bagley were also in attendance to recognize the positive impact of Sullivan’s commitment to the environment.

Jack Sullivan, who has dedicated his life to the preservation and enhancement Alexandria’s green spaces and waterways, embodies the spirit and spirit of the Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award. Karen Pallansch, CEO of AlexRenew, said that he is a testament to the spirit of AlexRenew.

The Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence award recognizes Alexandria residents who have demonstrated a commitment to the environment and preservation of local natural resources.

Sullivan has spent decades protecting Alexandrias natural resources. He has served on numerous City commissions and advisory boards that have greatly contributed to the protection and enhancement of Alexandria’s open space and tree canopy.

One of his many achievements was being a member of the citizen advisory panel that supervised the transfer of 101 acres of Cameron Station, U.S. Army, to the City of Alexandria. This effort resulted is 62 acres being retained to become Ben Brenman Park. Sullivan was instrumental to the creation of Seminary Hills Battery Heights’ open space easement in 1990. His advocacy resulted on a permanent conservation order for several forested areas that flow into Strawberry Run. It is now held by the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust.

Sullivan was a dedicated advocate for the preservation and enhancement of the public’s use of open spaces along the waterfront. He served on the City’s first waterfront committee, now the Waterfront Commission. He was also a member the Ad Hoc Combined Sewer System Plan Stakeholder Group. It was established in 2015, then reconvened in 2017. The group advocated for the remediation and improvement of the combined sewer systems. The RiverRenew Tunnel Project, which is currently in progress, is led by AlexRenew.

The Ellen Pickering Award is an annual tribute to her lifelong dedication and preservation of the City. The selection committee consists of one member of Ms. Pickering’s family, an AlexRenews Board of Directors representative, and an EPC representative. Each year, nominations can be accepted beginning in February. They are then awarded in April as part the City’s celebration of Earth Day.
