Circular Farm: A look

There is no waste, only resources! The motto of Circular FarmA landless farm located near Florence that aims to grow healthy, high-quality food, regenerating resources, and reducing waste production. Agronomist Antonio di GiovanniAll rights reserved Funghi EspressoIn 2013, a startup used coffee grounds to grow mushrooms. (The average coffee shop produces four kilos of used coffee grounds each day. Thus, the 200,000 bars in Italy are estimated to produce 380,000 tonnes every year.

The Funghi Espresso model draws inspiration from the Blue Economy theory, which states that waste materials are reused in subsequent production cycles in a cascading fashion. Production systems can not be seen as separate, but rather as a whole, with by-products that can be recycled or recovered in another production cycle, generating new energy, wealth, jobs, and employment.

Circular Farms Funghi Espresso Project aims at expanding the concept recycling to circular agriculture. The subsoil that was used is regenerated by worm composting. The humus is used to create organic conditions for synergic vegetable gardens. Worms are also integrated into fish food. Hydroponic methods can be used because the water contains organic leftovers from the fish. The Funghi Espresso model is more than mushrooms. It benefits worms, plants, and fish.

CircularCamp: Be the change

Florence-based association CircularCampIt empowers the next generation to make real change in the environment.

President says today’s youth are demanding solutions that work for them. Lorenzo Sciadini. Five generations are now competing over their ideas of sustainability for the first-time in history. Financial crises, inequality and poverty, along with environmental destruction, should be enough to convince us that it is time for the next generation. Adults have succeeded in convincing the young that nature is not perfect. They have inspired them to reduce their environmental impact. These are two of worst messages adults could pass on the next generation. Reality is that nature is abundant and in constant development. Human beings can have a greater positive effect on nature than they do negative. We have enough creativity and ingenuity that we can create abundance from scarcity. This is what our youth must learn: creativity and ingenuity as well as compassion and humanity.

These concepts underpin the two key projects that are organized by CircularCampFondazione Unicredit has supported the projects, as well as Fondazione CR Florence. There were 23 schools in Florence, and approximately 1,400 students who attended workshops, seminars, and experiences. New editions and teacher training are in the works.

Sciadini said that it is important that today’s youth understand that there are no set rules and that everything can be altered.
