The Lagos State Government has asked residents to work towards a cleaner environment following Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in the state.
According to a statement, Ibrahim Odumboni, the Chief Executive Officer of Lagos Waste Management Authority made this call. He also stated that LAWMAs sanitation workers, and waste managers were mandated to work tirelessly throughout the metropolis to keep it clean.
He said, “In anticipation that there will be an increase in waste production during and after the celebrations, we have intensified the operations, deploying our staff at strategic points in state, to clean the roads and highways, markets, and also to facilitate the clearing of black spots inflicting the environment.
We are aware of the fact that more waste will be generated during major events and are fully equipped to remove it. To help us reach our goals, we are also working closely with the Ministry of the Environment, our supervision ministry, and other stakeholders.
Odumboni also advised residents to ensure prompt disposal of waste and to sort their wastes properly.
Residents are urged to abstain from indiscriminate waste dumping and to embrace the culture of sorting, bagging, and separating waste, especially animal waste, in order to prevent pollution and facilitate evacuation.
We are determined to tackle the problem of illegal waste disposal in unauthorised locations like drains, medians, and canals. We are asking our people to collect their wastes in bags and have them containerized near their homes so that they can be easily evacuated by the Private Sector Participation Operators.
