On 1 June 2022, SEI will host the launch of the book “Keeping the World’s Environment under Review: An Intellectual History of the Global Environment Outlook”Jan Bakkes and Marion Cheatle, Nora Mzavanadze and Lszl Perr were the authors. The Integrated Assessment Society, PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, and Central European University (CEU) organized the event.
How do we take stock of the state and direction of the world’s environment, and what can we learn from the experience? The United Nations Environment Programme’s Global Environment Outlook (GEO), reports on the state of the planet are among the most impressive. The GEO project has been a landmark in global assessment reporting for nearly three decades. It has also inspired hundreds of similar processes at the local and regional levels worldwide through its many contributors.
This book gives an inside look at the evolution of GEO from its inception. This book was based on meticulous research and interviews with former heads of United Nations Environment Programme, diplomats, leading scientists, and senior leaders from collaborating organizations. The story is told through the eyes of five GEO veterans, who each played a crucial role in shaping the periodic assessments. GEO’s history provides striking insights and will save valuable time to those who commission, design and conduct, as well as critique and improve, assessments of environmental development in the next decade.
