BOSSIER CITY (La. (KTAL/KMSS). Inmates at Bossier Maximum Security Facility help to recycle cardboard waste that was produced at the parish prison. This helps the parish save money and the environment.
The Bossier Parish Sheriffs Office is sponsoring the new recycling program.
The parish police jury purchased a baler machine that is currently being used to make waste cardboard into bales at Bossier Parish Maximum Security Prison, Old Plain Dealing Road. The unit is operated by inmates who transport materials from nearby facilities.
Jim Firth, the police jury purchasing manager, said that they had looked at this project around a year ago. It started because of the high cost for trash at the facility. We were looking at ways we could reduce those expenses.
The $7,500 investment can be found at the loading dock of the Bossier Parish Maximum Facility Prison. Each bale generates between 850 lbs. 1,100 lbs. of waste. Any revenue generated by the recycling of waste will go back into the operating account to help support the program. Keep Bossier Beautiful mission.
Lynn Bryan, Keep Bossier Beautiful Executive director, stated that these are the first bells we have made from this project. We are optimistic that there will be more bales. Not only can they be recycled, but the resources will also be used to support our Bossier Parish.
Our maintenance superintendent is bailing out everything and moving it off to the side. Once that process is in place and running smoothly, we will bring in the next baler and start canning, said Firth.
