The Susquehanna Headwaters Environmental Collaborative was formed from work that began more than two years ago.
According to a media release, the organization was announced Monday, Dec. 20. It will bring together eco-minded businesses, individuals, and organizations “to increase their collective impact through cooperative project, shared resources, goal setting, and improved communication,” according a media release. The collaboration is looking for members and plans to hold an event in summer 2022.
The March 2019 Otsego County Environmental Summit at SUNY Ononta opened the door to the Susquehanna Headwaters Environmental Collaborative. According to the release, the summit was organized by Otsego County Conservation Association (OCCA) and Otsego Land Trust. It brought together representatives of 24 organizations for a daylong, facilitated conversation that explored a variety of environmental issues and explored possibilities for greater cooperation. Although these groups continued to meet informally throughout spring 2020, momentum was lost due to COVID-19.
Jeff OHandley, program manager forOtsego Country Conservation Association, stated that participation in Susquehanna Headedwaters Environmental Collaborative could have many benefits.
OHandley explained that by working together, community members can reach new audiences, expand their impact and make a difference in their communities. Collaboration between groups will create opportunities for partnership, and organizations can play to their strengths while furthering their individual missions.
The collaboratives steering group includes members from OCCA and Otsego County Department of Solid Waste and Planning. OHandley said that the group is open to all individuals, businesses, and organizations in the Susquehanna headwaters Region who have an interest in the environment. Students pay nothing, while individuals pay $20, $50, and $50 respectively for municipalities and nonprofits. Businesses pay $70. According to the release, these dues increase project and event promotion, planning and execution as well access to professional and learning opportunities.
