The Environment AgencyRed Industries Limited is under investigation for alleged illegal waste activities.
This follows a period of increased regulation from the Environment Agency at Walleys QuarryLtd Newcastle-under-LymeResidents in this area have had to deal with high levels of hydrogen Sulphide.
Red Industries Limited is Walleys Quarry Ltd.’s parent company.
A judge ruled in favor of a mother of five-year-old boy who brought a legal case against the Staffordshire landfill regulator.
The mother claimed that the regulator was emitted noxious gases that could shorten her son’s life.
Judge said that he wasn’t satisfied with the evidence that EA officials did what was required to comply with applicable legal duties.
The Court stated that there is an urgent public interest imperativethat the Environment Agency reduce levels as a matterof urgency.
The Environment Agency argued that there is not a risk to the boy’s life. However, the court heard from them that they have taken “very substantial measures” at the landfill site, and are “continuing to review matters”.
Following new information, the Environment Agency is now taking further steps to investigate Red Industries Limited.
A spokesperson for Environment Agency said:
“The Environment Agency is officially investigating Red Industries and associated companies, following new information about alleged illegal waste activities.”
A spokesperson for the company stated that they were responding to the Environment Agency’s announcement about an investigation into a violation of regulations at Walleys Quarry.
Walleys Quarry Ltd never received or disposed hazardous waste in violation of any regulations.
“Any allegations that it ever did so are baseless, and they are wrong. There is absolutely no basis for this investigation. The unprofessional way the EA has made it public as a responsible regulator is also not justified.
“Despite this, the company will fully cooperate with the EA investigation to establish the truth and make it known as soon as possible.
