Stormy weather and runoff Thursday caused the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality (SDECH&Q) to expand the existing water contact area at the Tijuana Slough and Imperial Beach shorelines north to include a portion of the Coronado Shoreline.
The Tijuana Estuary is contaminated by sewage-contaminated runoff from the Tijuana river. This indicates that ocean water contamination has now reached the international border north to Coronado shoreline.
Signs indicating sewage-contaminated water will be in place until the results of sampling prove that the ocean water is safe to use for recreational purposes.
