Felipe Calderon, ex-President of Mexico, presided over today’s first meeting at the FIA Environment and Sustainability Commission. The meeting was attended by Robert Reid, FIA Deputy President of Sport, and Andrew Fraser, Motorsport Australia CEO.
The guidance of the Commission on the various environment and sustainability-focused initiatives is part of the FIA’s commitment to become a major player inbuilding a low-carbon future, acting on its two pillars, Sport and Mobility.
The ambitious environmental strategy was adopted by the FIA in 2020. One of its objectives was to become carbon neutral in 2021. This would put it on track to net zero by 2030. This commitment is a continuation of the FIA’s growing efforts to reduce environmental impacts of its activities in sport and mobility. It sets clear goals and achieves them across all FIA spheres.
2021 saw new achievements, such as the implementation of carbon reduction measures within FIA administration, reducing carbon emissions, and investing in carbon compensation programs to offset the rest, in order to become carbon neutral in its first year. FIA also received the ISO 14001 certification in 2015 and made progress with the Environmental Accreditation Program (Sport and Mobility).
One of the most important achievements has been the development, research and production by FIA’s Technical Department of a 100 % renewable fuel that meets F1 standards. The FIA World Endurance Championship, and the FIA World Rally Championship will use sustainable fuel starting in 2022. This aligns with the FIA Environmental Strategy, and ensures a responsible, innovative motor sport. FIA Karting plans to use 100% sustainable fuel in all its championships starting in 2023. Work is already underway for other disciplines over the next few years.
FIA Environment & Sustainability Commission President, Felipe Calderon, said: I had the privilege to chair the inaugural meeting of the year’s Environment and Sustainability Commission. This was also the first meeting of a new Era for FIA. A new era that renews a strong commitment to the environment In this session, we reviewed our achievements so far. The FIA achieved its first goal last year, which was to become carbon neutral. This is in addition to launching a comprehensive process to become carbon zero by 2030. As a first step of our strategy, we reached carbon neutrality in 2021. We are now making sustainable motorsport and mobility accessible to all. We reviewed the strategy, inspected the most difficult issues, and discussed important issues such as our accreditation program, carbon emission reduction strategy, sustainable fuels, and sustainable tires. This is a new era at FIA with a renewed and serious commitment to making motorsport and mobility sustainable.
