To increase the State’s efforts at preserving the environment and biodiversity, and address the problem of climate change, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change launched a slogan to commemorate Qatar Environment Day 2022, which falls on Saturday February 26th.
The slogan Our Environment, Our Responsibility (Biatna Amana), refers to the rich biodiversity of Qatar’s ecosystem. It includes life in sky and water, wild and desert life, as well as land and natural resources.
This slogan is intended to raise awareness among the public and private sectors, as well as the community, and encourage them to take an active role in the enhancement of the State’s efforts to preserve the environment.
The Ministry will organize a series of activities nationwide to protect the environment.
Today’s major events include the deployment of an artificial coral reef at Sealine and the release of Ream deer. Tree plantatings and cleanup drives are also planned in Sealine Reserve.
Barouq Reserve will host tree plantation and cleanup events on Saturday. The reserve will also host many birds.
The Ministry will release baby mangrove fish and take a group on a trip to mangrove forests to educate people about the importance of mangrove forest protection.
Yesterday, Dr. Mohamed Saif Al Kuwari, an environment expert at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, spoke to Qatar TV about the importance of Qatar Environment Day.
Dr. Al Kuwari said that the day will send a message to all government institutions, private businesses, and community members to prevent environmental degradation. He stated that it was important to raise awareness about the importance and value of the environment.
Dr. Al Kuwari said that Qatar is one of the first countries to place great importance on the preservation of the environment. He stated that Qatar has taken a number of steps and played a proactive role in this regard. He spoke about Qatar’s laws to protect the environment. The Law No. 30 of 2002 was the first to protect the environment in Qatar. Law No. 19 of 2004, which aims to protect marine life.
Dr. Al Kuwari explained that Qatar has enacted and applied a number laws to preserve biodiversity, protect the eco-system, and punish violators. To a question on the effect of global climate changes to Qatar, he replied: Thank God, we didn’t witness the natural catastrophes such as tsunamis or floods that hit other countries in the past. However, Qatar suffered from higher temperatures than those who did.
This is why the State has emphasized greenery and tree planting drives. Plant Million Tree initiative aims to plant a million trees by the end this year. A second initiative to plant 10,000,000 trees is planned for 2030.
He stated that Qatar will become a country of greenery after the planting of 10 million trees. This will help to reduce the temperature and address the problem of climate change.
