Al Jazeera produced a virtual explanation centered around the map that explains the context and history of the Ukraine-Russia crisis.

The segment started by using a “video on video” shot to capture one of the video walls on Set 2 inside the network’s Studio 5 in Doha, Qatar.

The view then transforms into a fully virtual one with the presenter standing in a large hanger-like environment that includes a seemingly transparent glass-like panel that frames the view.

The camera retracts to reveal a floor map with 3D models of military vehicles.

Meanwhile, small flags sprout up as the presenter explains how various countries’ histories intertwine with the build up of the modern day conflict. To show that it represents multiple European and North American nations, the NATO flag is also shown.

The scene also contains 3D numbers that indicate the year of key past events. The map shows the countries that are being discussed.

As the segment continues, more flags and countries appear. Additional floating panels are used to highlight photos of key figures and, in some cases, quotes.
