Alsea School District is sued by the Principal for creating a hostile work environment

Alsea Elementary School’s principal is suing the district because it created a hostile work environment and allowed harassment by Superintendent Marc Thielman. Thielman is running for Oregon Governor.

Shanon Rice filed this lawsuit last week in Benton County Circuit Court. It describes the district in Benton County Circuit Court as a boys’ club where Thielman gave preferential treatments to male employees. It states that Marc Thielman, the Superintendent of Defendants, engaged in sexual harassment on an ongoing, regular, and sustained basis during Plaintiff’s employment.

Thielman quit in February to devote his attention to his gubernatorial campaign. Thielman made headlines earlier in the year when he declared that Alsea School District would not comply with the COVID-19 mask mandate.

Rice allegedly filed a formal complaint against both the Superintendent and district. In retaliation, her contract wasn’t renewed. The suit seeks $3.7million in economic damages and a jury trial.
