Mar. 26Investing today in a secure and comfortable retirement may seem intimidating to some.
Financial advisor Kyle Poling stated that he finds it “scary” for many people to use words like “markets” and “risks”.
Poling stated that it is possible to reduce the confusion in creating the right financial plan for your future needs by providing clear explanations and guidance.
He said that advisors often talk over clients’ heads or don’t think they understand, so they don’t explain. “You must be someone who can explain it in a way that people understand.”
He said that this is one of the reasons he decided to return to Beckley to open Poling Wealth Management.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in business at Concord University, Poling went to Winston Salem, N.C. where he received an accounting master’s from Wake Forest.
Within a matter of months, he realized that he wanted to work in investment management and was hired by BB&T North Carolina (now Truist Wealth).
He said, “I was a portfolio manger with what is now arguably the largest Truist team in the country.”
Poling explained that he managed more assets than $1B in that role.
He said, “My role was to do stock or equity research, helping clients manage their portfolios and putting together financial plans for them.”
After the birth of Olivia, his now 19-month old daughter, he said that he and Courtney, a Wyoming County native, began to reassess how their lives were.
“We just kinda sat back, and said, “Hey, what’s next for us?” He said. “And at end of the day, it was clear that we wanted closer to our families and to, quite frankly, to serve the community that has given me so much.”
“And at the conclusion of the day we decided that we wanted to be closer with family and, quite frankly to serve the community which gave me a lot.”
Poling admitted that he enjoyed working with Truist but said he wanted the chance to own his business and assist a larger portion of the financial population.
“Truist and most of the financial institutions are structured so that they don’t really incentivize advisers to help people have smaller accounts,” he stated.
“They don’t target people with less than half a million dollars to invest.”
Poling explained that this is why he decided to take the independent route when he returned home to his hometown.
He said, “If I put me name on the front door, if you go the independent way,”
“Yes, I need to make this huge investment up-front, and I will have to finance myself for some while, but it allows me to reach a whole demographic of people who are often overlooked by the current financial system.
He continued, “I know that sounds dramatic but I’ve witnessed it happen.” “If you go to a bank with a checking account, and no one has approached you and said, ‘Hey! Do you want help with investments?’ It’s because you didn’t meet their thresholds.
Poling said that potential clients may avoid wealth management simply because they don’t have enough money.
He stated that he takes great pride in providing services to clients at all levels of the financial spectrum.
He said, “It doesn’t matter what your personal wealth is.” “If you’ve got money, I can help you.
“… I’m here to help the people of my community and make everyone’s financial future brighter if they’d like to talk to me.
He said that this conversation is the beginning of financial security in the future.
He stated, “You give people numbers to understand what their money does for them.”
“And then you say, “OK, we’re going put this much into retirement every year, and if that’s the case, at retirement, it’s possible to expect that we can afford this much per year.”
“That’s simple. “People get that.”
Poling said that awareness has grown in a short time since he started his own business. He looks forward to spreading the message.
“What I want to see is more people come to my office who have never met with an advisor to plan their financial future. I want to understand how my money is working for me.
“Everyone can benefit by understanding how their money will provide for them in the future.”
