Army secretary says now is ‘most dangerous security environment’ in 25 years

Christine Wormuth (US Army Secretary) stated Wednesday that Russia’s aggression on Ukraine and the possibility of the conflict escalating make it the most dangerous moment in more than 20 years. 

Wormuth spoke at The Hills Future of Defense Summit, stating that this is the most dangerous security environment he has ever worked in over 25 years of national security work.

She added that there are plenty of things to keep you awake at night.

Wormuth stated, “I believe we have to plan and prepare for those kinds of possible outcomes.” Wormuth added that the Army has always planned for operations in a nuclear, chemical, or biological warfare landscape. It is a terrible thought to consider.

Wormuth stated that this is why so much emphasis is being put on NATO territory defense and putting forward a very strong deterrent position.

Kathleen Hicks (Deputy Secretary of Defense), was another speaker at Wednesday’s event. She stressed the U.S. commitment to Article 5, the NATO agreement that any attack on one member will trigger a response from all. 

Hicks stated, “We want to make it crystal clear that our commitments to Article 5 and to protecting every inch of NATO territory are iron-clad.”

Officials and legislators, including Senator Mark Warner (D.Va.), have suggested that a cyberattack on critical infrastructure might also trigger Article 5, although it’s unclear what a NATO response against cyber aggression would look.

Wormuth stated that we have 40,000 Army troops in Europe alone to show President Putin that there are no lines to be crossed.
