Baltic environment ministers met in Klaipeda to discuss current issues

VILNIUS — The Lithuanian-Lebanese and Estonian environmental ministers meet in Klaipeda on Tuesday, to discuss climate change, international wastewater transportation, and the development and operation of solar and wind farms.

Baltic Environment Council of Ministers will be briefed on the state of play regarding the decarburization process. A reform of environmental taxes will be introduced to create a “green channel” by removing administrative and bureaucratic obstacles to businesses. Estonia and Latvia also will present their activities in the area of climate change, according to a press release from the Lithuanian Environment Ministry.

The three ministers will discuss international waste shipping between the Baltic countries. They will also consider setting up an information exchange platform to track shipments and monitor trends.

They will also have a discussion about water management and a reform of the water sector. This is intended, among other things, to accelerate implementation of the Urban Wastewater Directive, and to connect as many people to centralized wastewater networks.

According to a press release, the council will also discuss the environmental impact assessment requirements for wind farm, national experiences, options for scrapping redundant assessment processes for renewable energy facilities, as well as transboundary assessment challenges related to planned offshore windfarms in the Baltic Sea.
