Bhupender Yadav, Environment Minister, arrives in Nairobi to represent India at the 5th UNEA

Bhupender Yadav, Union Environment Minister, arrived in Nairobi on Wednesday to participate in the special session at the 5th United Nations Environment Assembly.

The UNEA began on Monday and will end on March 4. A special session of Environment Assembly will be held to mark the 50th anniversary the United Nations Environment Program’s establishment (UNEP@50).

Under the direction of the Bureau of the sixth Session of the Environment Assembly, the session will be held on March 3, and 4.

“Arrived in Nairobi to participate in the Special Session United Nations Environment Assembly.

Bhupender Yadav tweeted that the Indian delegation would actively participate in building on and catalyzing impact on multilateral efforts to restore and protect the natural world upon which our economies rely.

Leena Nandan (Environment Secretary) had presented the national statement for India to the UNEA on Tuesday.

It stated that India is committed towards addressing plastic polluting to reduce its detrimental impact on terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems, as also to improve human well-being.

The secretary added that sustainable development is a core part of the country’s development strategy.

“Proactive steps have taken place to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals into government policies, schemes, and programs. She stated that our sustainable development policies cover many areas such as renewable energy and sustainable mobility.

According to the Environment Ministry, three resolutions regarding plastic pollution were submitted by member countries on February 27, according to the Environment Ministry. They were from Peru, Rwanda, Japan, and India.

The draft resolutions of Japan, Peru, Rwanda, and Japan were based in part on the principle a legally binding goal, while India’s was based on collective voluntary action.

A ministry official stated that India had agreed to set up an intergovernmental negotiation committee for a new international legally binding agreement in order to allow global action.

Official said that the Indian delegation was engaged constructively in negotiations.
