There is much talk about how farmers can diversify their income streams by using their natural capital. However, there is very little information about how they will work in practice or how they relate to existing farm enterprises, such as food production, tourism, and other business streams.
Environment Bank is very clear about how we approach this, and how landowners and farmers can benefit. First, we are not a broker. Our core business, BNG, is our core business. Our team of ecologists are currently setting up Habitat Banks in every area of England.
Habitat Banks can be easily integrated with other enterprises. Habitat Banks do not seek to take land from production. However, you can still grow arable crops by taking part in Habitat Bank creation projects.
You could also have your Habitat Bank grazed, cropped for hay, or even sit alongside your tourism venture.
We are fully funded so we can usually arrange lease and management payments in 12 weeks.
We have a ready-made solution, so unlike with a brokerage model, you dont have to manage the complex implementation process or take any of the risk of the scheme failing – that all sits with us.
Habitat Bank management is usually re-contracted to landowners or farmers. This provides part of the payments. Our team of ecologists supports this throughout the 30-year term.
We take into consideration all types of land, even those that are currently unproductive, as well as old pastures and scrubland, as well as under-performing arable lands.
This applies to all acres and does not need to be in a single block. Primarily we are looking for parcels of land between 10-100 hectares in size – we dont want to take over whole farms.
This is done on an individual basis. There is no one-size fits all. Our experienced team will meet with you on your land to discuss the possibilities.
We will work with your land operations to create habitats that work for your business and the environment. This will ultimately result in the best possible outcomes for nature.
The payments are guaranteed for a period of 30 years and will increase with inflation to reach 27,000 per hectare. It could be higher depending on the type habitat created.
Income will be split between a lease payment and a habitat management fee. Payments will be made annually with the first year’s upfront. We will pay you a fee to receive you to Environment Bank, and payments will begin immediately upon signing.
