Christine Duffy, president of CARNIVAL Cruise Lines, stated that compliance and caring for the environment is the number one priority for the company.

Yesterday’s comment was in response to The Tribune about reports from a local newspaper regarding the possibility of sanctions or penalties against Carnival Cruise Line.

A report by a US court commissioned in 2019 revealed that the company dumped more than 8,000 gallons food waste and hundreds of thousands of gallons treated sewage in Bahamian waters in 2017.

The Ministry of Transport and Local Government stated previously that it found the allegations alarming and that the Port Department and Bahamas Maritime Authority would investigate. However, the outcome has not been made public.

Carnival officials were asked yesterday by the newspaper whether they accept possible sanctions and what they would do in the future. Ms Duffy stated that the company is taking steps to protect our environment.

Carnival Corporation is committed. Ms Duffy said that compliance and care for our environment are our top priorities. We are proud of the work we are doing and the investments we are making to ensure we can continue to operate sustainably. We have invested in our newest ships with LNG technology. Any lessons we have learned, we have incorporated into our commitments to keep everyone safe, healthy, and happy, no matter where they are. This is our number one priority.

Recently, Jobeth Coleby Davis (Transport Minister) spoke to the media regarding the government’s investigation into Carnivals dumping in Bahamian waterways.

I was informed that the investigation had been handed over to the DEPP (Department of Environmental Planning and Protection). This report will contain the environmental section. They will then be able to determine the sanctions that would be placed on Carnival. Mrs Coleby-Davis stated that.

So, the DEPP and the Office of the Attorney General are now in discussion to determine the penalties for Carnival. My office did the investigation with them, as it falls under our jurisdiction for such incidents. However, if it relates to environmental issues and penalties, it would go to DEPP.
