SALISBURY Heather White, author of One Green Thing, Discover Your Hidden Power To Help Save the Planet, will be visiting the Center for the Environment at Catawba College for a presentation and book sign on Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m.

Hood Center for Chaplaincy Virtual Event on Suicides

The Center for Chaplaincy at Hood Theological Seminary is hosting a virtual Didactic on Monday, April 25, from 10-11:30 a.m.

Kate Penny, Atrium Health’s Program Coordinator for Zero Suicide, will act as facilitator.

The 2022 All Hood Symposium Embracing Diversity:Who Weve Been, Who We Are, and Who We Want to Be is April 28 – 29 at Hood Theological Seminarys Aymer Center, 1810 Lutheran Synod Drive

For attendance, registration is required. Masks are also required.

Literacy Councils Kentucky Derby fundraiser May 7

The Rowan County Literacy Council will host a Kentucky Derby fundraiser at New Sarum Brewing on Saturday, May 7. The Kentucky Derby event features a contest for the best/most creative hat and other activities.

The following programs have more than 50 volunteer tutors:

Adult Basic Education/Basic reading

English as a Second language

GED assistance

Citizenship prep

Youth tutoring at six RSS sites as well as at the Rowan Public Library

Tickets for the Kentucky Derby with Hat-i-tude start at $25 and include a selection desserts and hors-doeuvres as well as two beverage vouchers. You can enter a draw for a chance to win great prizes. Prizes will be awarded for the best fashion hat or most creative hat. New Sarum Brewing is located at 109 N. Lee St. The event runs from 5:30-8 p.m. Tickets are available at www.rcliteracy.org. Or cash/check at Literacy Councils at the main branch Rowan Public Library at at 201 W. Fisher St.
