BEIJING (Xinhua), February 17, 2017 — China has rolledout measures to comprehensively treat three major marine areas in the 14th Five Year Plan (2021-2025), according to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

In recent years, the ecological conditions have been improved in the Bohai Sea as well as the marine areas around Yangtze Estuary -Hangzhou Bay, and Pearl River Estuary. However, the sustainable improvement and preservation of the marine environment will continue to be a difficult task between 2021 and 2025 due to increasing pollution and ecological degradation.

China aims to raise the  proportion of excellent water quality in the three key marine areas by about 2 percentage points by 2025, compared with the 2020 level, according to an action plan jointly issued by the ministry and six other departments. The ability to respond to emergencies and prevent risks in the marine areas will be greatly improved.

The plan also outlines specific measures to prevent and restore ecology as well as work in other areas relating to the marine environment.
