China's crackdown on environment-related crimes effective: report-Xinhua

BEIJING (Xinhua), March 8, 2008 — According to a work report by the Supreme People’s Court, the crackdown on environmental-related crimes has produced positive results.

China prosecuted 49,000 people last year for illegal activities that jeopardized the environment, the first decline in eight-years, according to the report submitted Tuesday to a fifth session of the 13th National People’s Congress.

The report highlights illegal dumping hazardous waste and smuggling import waste.
