There are reports that rich countries are trying not to mention the permanent loss and damage caused climate crisis in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.
Monday’s major study examines the impacts of climate changes and the adaptation measures that countries will need to take. The nations are currently discussing what will be included as part of the final report. Rich countries want to minimize language about Loss and Damage. Loss and damage funding is a vital source of financial support for the poorest communities to deal with the devastating climate impacts mainly caused by the emissions from the global north.
Nushrat Chowdhury from Christian Aid’s Climate Justice advisor said that “We made real advances at the COP26 summit on climate change, getting Loss & Damage on the global agenda. Although wealthy countries did not agree to set up a fund to address these impacts, it was close to a breakthrough at COP27 which will be held in Egypt later this year.
“However, it seems like rich nations are trying stop this progress by attacking Loss and Damage via the IPCC process, which is being led by countries that claim they are climate leaders like the US and UK.
“It is shameful to watch them boast about their climate achievements in the public eye, but behind closed doors they are doing everything possible to stop support reaching the most vulnerable.”
