According to Jeffrey Barrus, Public Affairs Officer at US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, the climate crisis is a very serious ocean crisis. He said that the US is committed in pursuing ambitious global targets for ocean conservation. These include conserving or protecting at minimum 30% of the global ocean by 2020.

These remarks were made yesterday by the Brunei-USA Association and Green Brunei, in collaboration with Brunei Climate Change Secretariats (BCCS), who organized a virtual talk about climate change and its effects to raise awareness about Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy.

The talk was meant to provide information on how the Sultanate and the rest of the world intend to tackle climate change.

The virtual talk was delivered by Ir Ahmad Zaiemaddien Bin Pehin Datu Lailajasa MajorGeneral (Rtd), Dato Paduka Awang Halbi, who leads the BCCS at Ministry of Development.

He is responsible to implement the 10 key strategies outlined under the BNCCP and is the national representative for the United Nations Framework on Climate Change.

The virtual talk was attended mostly by 100 people with different professional backgrounds. It also featured a 10-minute Q and A session and a video presentation about climate change by Muhammad Saifulbahri bin Bahrin (Green Brunei representative).

Salimah binti Haji Saim President of BUSA said that the talk aims to expose its members, particularly the younger generation, to the role they play in conserving and protecting our climate.

BUSA was established in 2015 to promote the common interests of Brunei Darussalam with the US through commerce and education as well as cultural and social exchanges. It is made up of individuals who have been part of US-sponsored programmes, fellowships and academic scholarships.
