I am an environmental artist and author. The Intersectional Environmentalist – How to Dismantle Systems of Oppression and Protect People + Planet. I kind of stumbled upon the world of environmentalalism. I initially thought I wanted to become a veterinarian because I was fascinated by animals. But I began to gravitate towards ecosystems ecology, sustainability, and policy after I finished my schooling in environmental science and policy. My family was always thrifty and encouraged my love of nature. My maternal grandmother, who was my maternal grandmother, took me to the thrift stores often. She really made good use of everything, including reusing containers and bags. My paternal grandmother and great-grandmother had beautiful gardens outside. All of that influence and inspiration I felt was more than I realized.
In my everyday life, my goal is to live intentionally. I always consider the impact my decisions will have on the planet and people. But, I also try to embrace imperfection and nuance. I used to be very strict with myself and difficult about making sustainable choices in the past. However, I discovered that shame-based motivation was not a good fit for me and my overall well-being. It is much better to give myself grace and do my best. I use eco-friendly products for beauty and cleaning, recycle and compost, buy sustainably, and thrift clothing. I buy sustainably made, local artisan goods most often from local shops. I also founded an environment nonprofit. Intersectional EnvironmentalistIt gives me great joy to work with them every week. Sustainability is about more than just what I buy. It is also how I sustain my relationships, my community and myself. Do I have healthy friendships or am I resting? Do I get enough rest to be able to sustain myself? It is easier to feel happy when I am living sustainably.
