Colorado was once a coastal state. This map is from CU Boulder

Colorado might seem like a landlocked state, but the Interactive Geology Project at University of Colorado Boulder has shown that Colorado was not always this way.

According to a TimelineThe group found that Colorado was once covered by ocean water around 500 million years ago. As land masses continued shifting and changing, the land that is now the Centennial State eventually became coast before slowly shifting to the place it is today.

The video below shows how these changes occurred over time. It includes a quick overview of the shift and a more detailed explanation.
