Community Environment Days return to every ward in Toronto – City of Toronto

News Release

March 28, 2022

Community Environment Days will be hosting ward-based events for the first ever time since 2019. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Community Environment Day events have been held at Drop-Off Depots for the past two years. The City and local Councillors are hosting 44 events in the community this year. This will allow residents to drop off unwanted items and make arrangements for safe disposal, reuse, recycling, or recycling. Community Environment Days will run from Saturday, April 2, through the end of July.

Residents can bring books, sporting goods and clothing, as well as electronics such as cell phones and computer monitors, for donation.

This year, events will have kitchen containers for organics available for purchase. Residents can also pick up bagged compost at each event to help them grow their gardens while supplies last. The compost at events is made from yard waste, organic material and other materials collected at the curb around Toronto.

Nearly 1,384,200 kilograms of compost were collected in 2019, the year of the last ward-based events. Also, 78,867 kilograms of reusable household goods were collected. 354,890 kg of household hazardous and 103,710kg of electronics were collected.

Due to the success of Drop-Off Depots’ Community Environment Day events over the past 2 years, the City plans to hold seven events at Drop-Off Depots during 2022.

Quotes:

I am happy to see the return to our local wards of Community Environment Day events. These events keep items out the landfill and allow residents to dispose of hazardous waste, household goods, or electronics in their own communities. I encourage residents and others to come to these Community Environment Days. They will help us safely dispose household hazardous waste.
Mayor John Tory

Community Environment Days are back for the second year. I encourage all Torontoans to take advantage of this opportunity and do some spring cleaning in a responsible way.
Jennifer McKelvie (Scarborough Rouge Park), Chair, Infrastructure and Environment Committee
