(Pesticides go beyondFebruary 14, 2022 – Food scraps that are not properly composted can release methane. This greenhouse gas has a global warming potential of 84 times that of carbon dioxide in its first 20 years. You can reduce methane emissions by composting these scraps. Also, organic practices that eliminate greenhouse gases like nitrogen fertilizer are supported.

California’s SB 1383In 2016, the law required individuals and businesses to separate food scrap from trash. Individuals and companies can compost their food waste. However local agencies offer separate bins for organic materials (including food waste, garden trimmings, paper, and other organic materials). The law also provides for the collection and distribution of food waste. surplus edible food.

Tell your Governor and all state legislators to follow California’s lead in combating climate change through composting. If you are a California resident, thank your legislators for passing SB 1383.

Methane accounts for 16% of greenhouse gas emissions. However, due to its higher warming potential, it is a major contributor to climate change. Minimum as much as carbon dioxide (CO2). Methane emissions from methane are most commonly generated by agriculture, energy production, or landfills. Two of these sources can be reduced if food waste is diverted from landfills and composted. The other benefit is the Synthetic fertilizers are a particularly noxious contributor to the rising planetary temperature, largely through these products’ emissions of nitrous oxide, or NOx — another potent greenhouse gas that also pollutes the air and feeds the development of ozone. NOxIs approximately 300 times more potent in trapping heat as CO2. Nitrous oxide levelsAll sources have seen a 20% increase in their production, compared with pre-industrial levels.

Directing food waste to be composted can help support organic gardening, farming, land management, and reduce dependence on synthetic nitrogen fertilizer. California is an example to follow. Other states should follow California’s lead and require the separation of compostable waste. Mandate the use of organic soil managementPublic agencies that manage parks, playing fields, or other public lands.

You don’t need to wait for a law. Get started composting right away.

When food scraps go to the dump, their anaerobic breakdown releases methane. This greenhouse gas has a 84-fold global warming potential over its first 20 year in the atmosphere. Composting these scraps will not only reduce methane emission but also support organic practices that eliminate greenhouse gases like nitrogen fertilizer.

California’s SB 1383, signed into law in 2016, now requires individuals and businesses to separate food waste from trash. Individuals and businesses can compost their food waste. However, local agencies provide separate bins for organic materials such as food waste, paper, and trimmings from the lawn. The law also provides a way to collect and distribute surplus edible foods.

Methane accounts for 16% of greenhouse gas emissions. However, because it has a greater warming potential, it can affect climate change less than carbon dioxide (CO).2). Methane emissions from methane are most commonly generated by agriculture, energy production, or landfills. Two of these sources can be reduced if food waste is diverted from landfills and made into compost. In addition, the use of synthetic fertilizers is a particular and noxious contributor to the rising planetary temperature, largely through these products’ emissions of nitrous oxide, or NOx — another potent greenhouse gas that also pollutes the air and feeds the development of ozone. NOx is roughly 300 times as potent in trapping heat as CO2. All sources have seen a 20% increase in nitrous oxide levels compared to preindustrial levels.

Directing food waste to be composted can support organic farming, gardening, and land management. This will reduce our dependence on synthetic fertilizer. Please draft and pass legislation to follow the California lead in mandating the separation of compostable material and requiring that public agencies manage organic land on parks, playing fields and other public lands.

This legislation will have a greater impact if you use your leadership to demand that state parks be managed with organic land management practices. Organic practices not only combat climate change but also protect us from pesticide hazards.

We are grateful.

Letter to Governor and California state legislators:

I thank you for passing and implementing 2016 SB 1383. It now requires businesses and individuals to separate food waste and trash.

Methane is released when food scraps are disposed of in landfills. It has a greenhouse effect with anaerobic degradation that can release methane. This greenhouse gas has a potential to cause 84 times more global warming than carbon dioxide. Composting these scraps will not only reduce methane emission but also support organic practices that eliminate greenhouse gases like nitrogen fertilizer.

By using your leadership, please increase the impact on SB 1383 and require that state parks be managed with organic land management practices. Organic practices are not only a way to combat climate change but also protect us against the dangers of pesticides.

Thank you.
