Planet Awards Support Projects Southeast Michigan Kalamazoo Area

JACKSON, Mich., April 25, 2022/PRNewswire/ The Consumers Energy Foundation celebrated Earth Month today with the provision of a wide range of energy-efficient products. $500,000Three projects that will have a significant effect on the environment are listed below Michigan’sEnvironment preserving freshwater resources, planting 1000 trees and protecting habitat Michigan’s wildlife.

Foundation’s third Planet Awards went to the Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development. Oshtemo Charter Township, Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority, and Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority. The grants are intended for preservation, restoration and protection. The following are the three winning projects:

  • Macomb County, $250,000 The Green Macomb Urban Forest Partnership will plant 1,000 trees, 1,500 native shrubs and 40 acres of pollinator habitat in the county’s public land. It will also improve the county’s urban tree canopy. Mount Clemens, Harrison Township Clinton Township. Additional planting opportunities will also be available Shelby Township, Macomb Township, Roseville, Eastpointe, Warren, St. Clair Shores, Sterling Heights, Utica Center Line.
  • Oshtemo Township(Kalamazoo County), $150,000Oshtemo Charter Township, Kalamazoo Nature Center and others will collaborate to restore the ecological health on a two-mile section the historic Fruit Belt Rail Corridor. They will also provide hands-on environmental education opportunities and stewardship opportunities focusing on climate resilience.
  • Brighton, $100,000The Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority will restore the floodplain and forested habitats that make the Huron River headwaters. The two-year-long project will plant native replacement trees in areas where oak trees and ash trees were destroyed by pests or disease. It will also improve native pollinator habitat in nearby meadows, prairies, and other areas.
