East Cambridgeshire District Council has signed up for the Investors In the Environment accreditation program, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability.

The scheme was signed up by the council, which in 2019 declared a climate emergency.

It hopes that becoming independent accredited will help it achieve its goals of becoming net carbon neutral by 2040.

Chair of the operational service committee, Cllr Julia Huffer said that we have already made impressive progress towards becoming carbon-neutral.

This included the planting of community orchards, and reconfiguring waste collection routes so that bin lorries use less fuel.

The council is currently updating its environmental plan, which includes 20 actions it will undertake over the next 12 month.

It hopes to attain bronze status in the current year, and silver status by 2023.

Once more difficult areas are dealt with, the highest level of green will be awarded.
