Chair of South Cambridgeshire District Councils Climate and Environment Advisory Committee Pippa Hillings stated: This fortnight’s free events comes right on the heels the global climate summit at Glasgow. It is part our Zero Carbon Communities and Green Connect programme which aims to help South Cambridgeshire address climate change on a very local scale. There are many useful topics that will be covered, including how to make your business more sustainable and how to get local action. Similar to our success series of events last year, these webinars will demonstrate how we can all do small but significant things every day. As a Council, being green is at the core of everything we do. I am excited to participate in the online discussions on this topic over the next fortnight. We are proud to announce that we have been named a finalist for the Green Public Service Category of the Public Sector Transformation Awards 2022. This is yet another proof that the environment is at the heart everything we do.

South Cambridgeshire District Council declared climate emergency and ecological emergencies in 2019. It is responding to these crises by making changes in how it delivers services that are beneficial to residents, businesses and parish councils. The Council has made being green to our core a priority in its Business Plan since 2018. Its approach to reducing emissions via mitigation, adaptation, natural solutions across all areas under the Council’s control is what delivers it. In May 2020, the Council adopted its first Zero Carbon Strategy. This strategy outlines the need to reduce net carbon emissions by at least 30% by 2030, if not earlier. The authority plans to support this. The Council’s Doubling Nature’ strategy was created in February 2021. It is a sister document of its Zero Carbon Strategy. This strategy outlines an approach to increasing wildlife-rich habitats, tree cover, and access to green space in South Cambridgeshire. These are nature-based solutions for adapting to climate shocks like drought, flooding, and heatwaves. Through the Councils Zero Carbon Communities grant programme, 310,000 have been given to 51 different community groups. These projects help communities with tree planting, energy efficient lighting, food production/ distribution, and waste reduction.
