There is a message often written on signs displayed at climate marches around the world that reads: “Every disaster movie starts with the government ignoring a scientist.” The star-studded Don’t Look UpDirected by Adam McKay, this satirical film focuses on scientists who do their best to not be ignored.
The comedy — which Record your Netflix viewing recordIt is nominated to be Nominated for Four Awards upon streaming release Oscars, including Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards — uses the threat of a large comet on a collision course with Earth to highlight the very real and urgent threats posed by the climate crisis. In the film, astronomers are consistently ignored as they try to alert the media or to implore the US president to take action before it’s too late.

“The film does not set out to articulate a full-system solution or provide action tips for those who might agree with the message. The film is a wakeup call. Films that attempt to convey a message can feel self-righteous. But this film avoids that feeling by using humor. I felt empathy for Dr. Mindy and Kate, as well as their frustration at being ignored and embarrassment when they failed to express their concerns appropriately. I found the final scene heart-wrenchingly beautiful, even as cast against impending disaster.”

The film was the first to tell a story about the effects of the climate crisis. This win was remarkable. Centering inequality, the film demonstrates through two families just how the climate emergency not only is exacerbated by the existing social orders but how it affects all areas of life — housing, public health, transportation, to name a few — and comes for the most vulnerable first: truths we are already all too familiar with today.
Mission Blue
Sylvia Earle, an American oceanographer, is a remarkable person. She began diving and was part of scientific missions as a young girl in a time when there wasn’t enough space for women. Her dedication made history. She was the first woman to lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In 1998, Time magazine named her the first female Hero of the Planet. Sylvia, who is now 86, continues to dive. She is an example of dedication and determination for the environmental cause.
Minimalism: A documentary on the important things
This movie could be described as a minimalist film. The documentary is more than that. It is rich with reflections and content about the movement. It shows how we can live more sustainably and use less natural resources. You have more time to spend on the things that matter most, like your family and friends.
Tomorrow is here
Climate change is more than a prediction made by scientists. It’s a reality for many people around the world. From the young Krikati Indigenous woman who became a volunteer firefighter to protect her People’s land, to the small farmer who faced six years of drought in his home state, this film tells the story of Brazilians who have already been affected by the climate crisis.
The Game Changers
This documentary discredits the myth that high performance requires animal protein. Arnold Schwarzenegger explains how he felt after switching to a plant-based diet. Food for thought (pun intended). Roman fighters did away with meat. Analyses of gladiators’ bones show that they ate a plant based diet. This is a good opportunity to rethink our meat consumption.
Sexy Killer
Sexy Killer, a popular environmental documentary that was viewed by over 30 million people on YouTube in 2019, is still widely discussed and is still being viewed. This film reveals the adverse effects of the coal industry in Indonesia – from mining to shipping and burning it – and also the environment and the political scandal behind it. Why is it called the Sexy Killer? “Because it’s a killer to society but sexy for the politicians”.
Chasing Coral
Australian scientists and photographers are searching for evidence that global climate change is destroying coral reefs. The so-called coral bleaching is a result of the wide range and mortality rates of the species. What could have seemed like a tragic story has turned into a network that supports the oceans. You will cry when you see images of coral reefs.
Before the Flood
This film features Leonardo DiCaprio’s journey around the globe with scientists who reveal the truth about climate change. It also shows how disinformation campaigns are used to confuse the public. DiCaprio has unprecedented access and knowledge to world thought leaders, which allows him to search for the hope in a rising tide a catastrophic news. A voluntary carbon tax was used to offset the film’s carbon emissions.
How to make the world better
The film tells the story about the founding of Greenpeace. It was based on an idea that seemed impossible. A small group of activists set out on a boat to stop nuclear weapons testing off Alaska’s coast. The plan did not work, but it drew the world’s attention to the protection of the environment and a call for peace.
