MOUNT VERNON (VA) – Earth Day is April 22 but there are several events in Mount Vernon throughout the month that offer the opportunity to do your part to save the planet. As you improve the environment, you can learn. These are great for family fun.

April 23:Join the Friends of Dyke Marsh and get involved in their work Removal of Invasive Plants from the Marsh.

Meet at the Haulroad Trail entrance bulletin board, bench. If you have one, bring water, gloves and hand clippers. Instructions, examples and trash bags as well as examples of targeted plants will be provided. There will be some hand clippers, loppers and other tools to share.

Layers, long sleeves and trousers, sturdy shoes, and sun protection are all good options. Please do NOT bring dogs.

April 23: 4th Annual Environment Expo: Get Outdoors! Learn and Do!Fort Hunt Park, 8999 Fort Hunt Road.

Mt. Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck, and the National Park Service include: Exhibitors and Workshops; Live Reptile & Owl Programs; Electric Vehicles; Nature Walks; Junior Ranger Program; Recycle Right, Touch-a-Trucks, Compost Dropoff; CCTV Robot Demos; Purple Glass Monster (bring your glasses, it’s a recycler); give-aways and many more. Live music will be provided by Billy B, the Natural Science Song and Dancing Guy.FairfaxCounty.gov has more information

April 30: Annual Little Hunting Creek CleanupSponsored by State Sen. Scott Surveil, Del. Paul Krizek (D-24th) and Friends of Little Hunting Creek.

The cleanup will be staged from two locations:Janna Lee Avenue atLittleHuntingCreekBridge: and Mount Vernon Shopping Plaza near the Sherwin-Williams Paint Store.LittleHuntingCreekis one of the most severely degraded streams in Fairfax County.Water, trash bags and cleaning supplies will be provided.

April 30 Raptor RaptureBelle Haven Park is located off the GW Parkway.

You can see raptors up close, such as owls or hawks. Sponsored by the Friends of Dyke Marsh and Secret Gardens Birds and Bees, the National Park Service, and the Monarch Teacher Network. Free.
