This is the story so farEarth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 by people all over the globe to show support for the protection and preservation of the earth. Protests, awareness sessions, plantation drives, competitions for kids, and others are all part of the Earth Day events. Earth Day is one of the most important civic observances in all of human history.

Why is Earth Day celebrated?

Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. politician, was the first to celebrate Earth Day. He also served as a Senator and Governor during his career. A massive oil spillage in 1969 devastated Santa Barbara, California. This was an inspiration for Senator Gaylord Nelson to work towards protecting the environment.

Senator Nelson was inspired and motivated by the student antiwar movement at the time. He wanted to bring that energy into public consciousness about pollution. Pete McCloskey, a Republican congressman, was his partner in a teach-in. This is an informal lecture on college campuses that aims to raise awareness about the environment. Senator Nelson also invited Denis Hayes to help organize the lectures. This was done to maximize attendance.

Mr. Hayes realized the potential of the exercise. He wanted all Americans benefit from it. Therefore, he created a national staff with 85 people to promote it. Soon others were inspired to help protect the environment joined them. The lecture day was renamed Earth Day. It attracted media attention and inspired around 20 million Americans who marched against the effects of decades of industrial growth that has shown little concern for the environment or the health of human beings. Earth Day received rare support from Republicans and Democrats, rich or poor, urban dwellers, farmers and business leaders as well as labour and political leaders.

What was the impact of the Earth Day 1?

The United States had established the United States Environmental Protection Agency by 1970 to handle all matters related to environmental protection. The country also passed many environment-related laws such as the National Environmental Education Act and the Occupational Safety & Health Act.

Two years later in 1972, the U.S. Congress approved the Clean Water Act. The Endangered Species Act was enacted in 1973.

How did it become such a huge phenomenon?

Before the 1990 Earth Day, environmental leaders approached Mr. Hayes to plan a worldwide campaign. Earth Day activities would see participation from around 200 million people in 140 countries, according to estimates. It also opened the door to the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

In 1995, former President Bill Clinton awarded Senator Nelson the presidential medal of liberty, the nation’s highest civilian honour, in recognition of his contributions to saving the environment.

Mr. Hayes also led a global campaign for Earth Day 2000. It focused on global warming as well as the need for clean energy. To spread the message of environmental protection, around 5,000 environmental groups in 184 nations reached out to hundreds and millions of people worldwide.

2020 marked the 50th anniversary Earth Day. Because most places around the globe were under coronavirus lockdown, the event was conducted digitally.

What is the theme of the 2022 Earth Day event?

This year’s Earth Day theme will be “Invest in Our Planet”. The theme of Earth Day is to promote partnerships between citizens, governments, businesses, and governments in order to urgently take action towards protecting our environment for a sustainable future.
