Egyptian Participation at the Fifth Session, United Nations Environment Assembly

Egypt: The Third International Scientific Conference On Environment and Sustainable Development 'Climate Change - Challenges and Confrontation'

About the United Nations Environment Assembly, (UNEA-5.2).

The UN Environment Programme hosts the United Nations Environment Assembly. This assembly brings together representatives of 193 member states, businesses, civil societies, and other stakeholders to reach an agreement on policies to address the most pressing environmental problems in the world.

UNEA is structured in two steps. The first step, UNEA-5.1, was an online-only conference that took place from February 22-23, 2021. The second step, UNEA-5.2, is in-person and online in Nairobi.

The United Nations Environment Assembly’s fifth session (UNEA-5.2), will resume on February 28th and March 2nd 2022 in Nairobi.

The theme for UNEA-5 was “Strengthening Activities for Nature to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals”. This highlights the vital role nature plays both in our daily lives and in achieving sustainable development in economic, environmental and social terms.

UNEA-5 offers a platform for Member States to share their best practices for sustainability. It will provide momentum for governments to build on and catalyze multilateral environmental efforts to restore and protect the natural world upon which our economies and society depend.

Immediately after UNEA-5.2, the Assembly will host a Special Session on 3-4 March 2022. It is dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of the creation UN Environment Programme.

Egyptian Participation Activities

Yasmine Fouad, Egypt’s Minister for Environment, traveled to Nairobi, Kenya to take part in the second half of the fifth session United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-52).

The meeting is under the title ‘Strengthening Actions to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals’ and will feature representatives from 193 UN member states, companies, civil societies organizations, and other stakeholders.

Fouad explained the second part of the session would discuss how actions for nature can be strengthened to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs). It will focus on the central role that the environment has in our lives as well as in sustainable social, economic and environmental development.

She stated that the meeting is intended to confirm that the environment is the key element in achieving the 2030 Agenda goals, which were adopted by all UN member nations in 2015. This agenda aims to end conflict and poverty, build just and inclusive societies and ensure the long-term protection of the planet’s natural resources.

Fouad also highlighted the importance of environmental problems, which Egypt contributed to solving via its presidency of 14th Conference on Biological Diversity. It also prepared the draft roadmap to the post-2020 period.

Minister Xie stated that many topics will be discussed at the ministerial meetings. These include waste and chemicals management, green economic issues, biodiversity and the role nature plays in sustainable development.

Fouad will host a series bilateral meetings with her counterparts on the sidelines of the session’s meetings to discuss bilateral cooperation issues and prepare for COP 27, which is set to be held in Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh in November.

Yasmine Fouad, Environment Minister, participated in a meeting of the first technical mission from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat to discuss COP27’s roadmap and the logistical and technical preparations made on that point.
