Electricity is vital, but the environment will not suffer: Aaditya Thackeray

On Monday, February 14, Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray visited Nandgaon fly ash dump (Maharashtra State Power Generation Ltd) in Nagpur.

These decisions were made during the trip:

  • Directed Nandgaon Ash Pond to be restored to original state within the next fifteen days. Nandgaon and Waregaon ashbunds will both be permanently closed.
  • Central Govt norms require 100% flyash utilisation. Fly ash can also be used in infrastructure projects.
  • Fly ash has a negative impact on local livelihoods. We will create a plan for local upliftment and employment opportunities in the next 15-days.
  • Comprehensive study to determine how polluting and ageing coal-fired power stations can be reduced in a systematic way. For pollution control measures, an audit of all power plants in Maharashtra will take place. TPPs that do not meet the prescribed standards will be subject to severe sanctions.

“We had received complaints concerning pollution by fly ash dumping in Nandgaon. I also saw videos giving complete details about this. ANI quoted Thackeray as saying that he had to visit the field to see the actual situation.

Fly ash dumping has been stopped since February 4. After reviewing the situation, we ordered that the fly-ash dumping pipeline be immediately removed and that the area where it is being dumped be cleared. He said that electricity is essential, but that we will ensure that the environment isn’t damaged.”

He also instructed officials to immediately remove the fly ash pipeline from the area where it is being dumped.

Thackeray had previously postponed his visit in the area scheduled for last Monday because the government declared a public holiday to grieve the death of Lata Mangeshkar.

On Tuesday, February 8th, 2008, a second round of voting will be held. Maharashtra cabinet minister Aaditya ThackerayReports stated that fly ash dumping at Nandgaon village due to the State Power Generation Company has been stopped as of February 4.
