Environment Agency warns south-west coastal communities to be prepared for flooding by Storm Eunice

  • Flooding at the coast could cause damage to homes and businesses.
  • Residents urged not to wait for flooding to start

The Environment Agency urges people living along flood-prone areas on the north coast of Cornwall and Devon to be prepared for flooding due to a storm Eunice’s tidal surge.

The Environment Agency urges people to take precautions to avoid flooding.

Strong winds and large waves, combined with storm surge, can cause wave-overtopping or flooding to vulnerable communities along the north coast during high tide.

It is recommended that people avoid coastal areas and avoid roads, paths, piers, and promenades along the shoreline.

Residents are urged by the Environment Agency to sign up for Flood Warning messages. They also need to follow the Prepare, Act, Survive guidance to ensure they are prepared for flooding.

  • Prepare a bag with insurance and medical documents
  • Check the latest flood situation online
  • Learn how to shut off your gas, electricity, and water
  • Check your insurance to ensure you are covered in case of flood damage. Renting a home means you must have insurance to protect your belongings.
  • If you are in danger of flooding, call 999 immediately and follow the instructions of emergency services.

Jim Flory, Environment Agency, stated:

Strong winds from Storm Eunice could create a storm surge and large waves that could lead to flooding along the north coast.

We are trying to give communities early warning so they can plan ahead. If necessary, we will issue flood warnings and have teams on the ground taking steps to reduce the effects of flooding.

A Met Office weather advisory has been issued for Storm Eunice. It is important that people take extra care when near the coast. We urge everyone to remain safe and warn wave-watchers against the unnecessary danger of taking Stormselfies.
