Environment can be saved without investment, and with ‘conflict free advice’

The environment can be saved through laws, plans and policies that require no investment, but crucially based on conflict-free advice, the Church’s environment commission said on Thursday.

The commission appealed voters to vote wisely to ensure respect for common good in the next legislature.

The church environment organ issued a statement nine days before the Malta general election which is being held amid the backdrop of the “senseless invasion” of Ukraine.

The world, Europe, and Malta should move to stop using fossil fuels and nuclear energy. This is especially true in a war that has brought to the forefront the fundamental environmental problem of energy sources.

The commission (KA), invited the new administration to:

  • Revise the Strategic Plan for the Environment and Development. The local plans should be the final arbiter regarding the height restrictions for every street in Malta. It is completely unacceptable that a web-like network of policies undercuts what is stated and shown in the local plan.
  • Publicize the 2014 revision of the Rural Policy and Design Guidance. The public consultation ended in August 2020. This revision has been collecting dust, allowing more buildings outside of development zones, even though they have not been extended officially.
  • Revise the Development Control Design Policy, Guidance and Standards 2015 which is wreaking havoc on Gozo’s ridges.
  • If you feel that any electoral promise would lead to the erosion of the common goods, be courageous and drop it.
  • You can take action to ensure that agricultural land in Maltese Islands receives a higher level of protection than it currently enjoys.
  • Make sure that the public consultation on policies and plans is not fake. It is not intended to address narrow interests.
  • Present a Bill to Parliament that aims partly to finance political parties by State. This bill ensures that members are paid decent salaries that lessen their dependence on contractors and businessmen.
