Environment Canada confirmed that hundreds of dying turres and seabirds washed up on beaches along Newfoundland’s northeast coast and South Coast of Labrador in the last month have starved to death.
Environment Canada says all the birds examined to date by Newfoundland and Labrador’s Animal Health Division have been emaciated, pointing to starvation as the cause of death.
Environment Canada states that at this point, it is believed that strong northeasterly winds pushed large numbers of thick-billed murresinshore away from their offshore foraging areas.
The birds were not allowed to eat, which caused them to become weaker and made it impossible for them to fly back to the ocean. Environment Canada states that while the incident is not unusual, this latest one is unique because of the large geographical area involved.
