Environment Canada issues a snowfall warning for East Vancouver Island

Environment Canada has issued a warning about heavy snowfall Tuesday in East Vancouver Island, particularly around Campbell River.

According to the weather agency, snowfall could be as low as 5-10 cm in certain areas along the island’s east coast, which runs from Courtenay to Campbell River.

Snowfall is expected to start Tuesday morning, before gradually easing in some areas during afternoon.

Environment Canada says that snowfall will likely turn to rain in communities near the water, as warm winds from the Strait of Georgia arrive.

“However, areas far from the water and inland (including Campbell River) will likely see snow continue throughout the afternoon,” reads a Monday afternoon weather warning.

“The snowfall accumulation will likely rise as a consequence.”

Although most of the snowfall will end by afternoon, Environment Canada warns about continued snowfall Tuesday night “with highly varied accumulation.”

Weather agency reminds drivers to be prepared for unexpected road conditions such as low visibility and sudden heavy snowfall.

After a rare April storm that dumped snow in several areas, approximately 30,000 BC Hydro customers lost their power on Vancouver Island over the weekend.
