Environment Canada has issued extreme-cold warnings for parts of British Columbia, along the Alberta border.
According to the Weather Agency, an Arctic air mass mixed with a strong north wind is bringing windchill values close to -40 C to the Peace River Region, including Dawson Creek and Fort St. John.
The cold weather was expected to continue until Tuesday, before warming up on Wednesday.
To the south, a warning was also issued for Elk Valley and Kootenay national parks. Environment Canada has warned that wind chill values close to -35 are possible overnight and Tuesday night.
It stated that some moderate temperature changes were expected during daytime.
The weather agency warns that wind chills near -40 can cause frostbite in minutes and increase the risk of hypothermia.
It says that overnight wind chills of -10 to 15 degrees Celsius were expected in Metro Vancouver, Howe Sound, and the Fraser Valley, with temperatures expected to rise later in the week.
