Environment Canada has issued extreme freeze warnings in several areas of British Columbia near the Alberta border.

According to the Weather Agency, an Arctic air mass combined by a northwind is bringing wind chill values close to -40 C in the Peace River Region, including Dawson Creek and Fort St. John.

The cold weather was expected to continue until Tuesday, before warming up on Wednesday.

To the south, a caution has been issued for Elk Valley, Kootenay, and Yoho national park areas. Environment Canada predicts wind chill values of near -35 overnight and Tuesday night.

It said that moderate temperatures were expected during the day.

The weather agency warns that wind chills near -40 can cause frostbite in minutes and increase the risk of hypothermia.
